l_a620ea6594c8e81f5797a1fb110b7470It appears that Broken Social Scene is playing at Bass Concert Hall this Saturday, January 31.   I’ve only seen this band once, at SXSW in 2003.  They were definitely worth seeing.  I don’t have any of their recent stuff, but you and I can check it out on their MySpace page.

Feist and Emily Haines of Metric and Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton, who I both really like,  are/were both in this band.  Broken Social Scene has a lot of instruments, so Bass is a great place to see them.  Bonus:  They’re Canadian (for those of you who like that sort of thing).

Beautiful Boy - David and Nic Sheff @ Book People, Tuesday, January 27th

beautiful_boy_2 David Sheff, author of Beautiful Boy, and his son Nic Sheff, author of Tweak will be at Book People on Tuesday, January 27th at 7:00 pm to talk about Nic’s meth addiction and I’d imagine, their two books.

I’ve only read Beautiful Boy, but I thought it was an accurate and enthralling portrait of a drug addict and his family.  The book seemed a little repetitive at times, but I’d recommend reading it and attending the event at Book People!

This Week’s Featured Fun - A Faulty Chromosome, Friday @ Red 7

faultyA Faulty Chromosome promised they would send a homemade video to be showcased here, but they didn’t.  The price: a public shaming on the calendar of fun.

I like them, so maybe you will too.  They like to think of themselves as New Order meets the Magnetic Fields.  Here’s a song I’ve posted without their permission.

A Faulty Chromosome - Jackie-O.mp3

They’ll be playing at Red 7 on Friday, January 23rd with Coma in Algiers, Cry Blood Apache, Crushes, and Venison Whirled.  I’ve never heard any of those bands.

Coconut Records - New Album Released TODAY!

I love Coconut Records.  Coconut Records is a little project of Jason Schwartzman’s that sounds nothing like Phantom Planet, if that’s what you’re thinking.  I’m not sure how you feel about Jason Schwartzman, but if you don’t love Rushmore, then I can’t help you.

Getting to the point,  his  sophomore album, Davy, came out today and is, no doubt, sweet.  Check out some of the new and old stuff on his MySpace page.  I recommend “Wandering Around” (new) and “West Coast” (old).  I think you might like it!
