SXSW Recap
Another SXSW has come and gone. I love SXSW and would take it over Austin City Limits any day, week, or month. While the official shows may be kind of a pain, even for those with wristbands, the unofficial shows are always a good time. I didn’t go to that much stuff, but here a few highlights:
most enjoyable band I hadn’t seen before: It’s a tie. Port O’Brien and the Handsome Furs. Port O’Brien is like a sweet mix of old Modest Mouse, the Meat Puppets, and Neil Young. Handsome Furs, a husband/wife duo featuring the lead singer of Wolf Parade, is loud and fun. Both great. Buy their albums.
biggest disappointment: When Mirah went on an hour earlier than posted at the People In A Position To Know/Olympia All Ages Project house show and we missed her! Something about “I already played 4 times this week”. Just rip my heart out - seeing Mirah live is one of my main goals in life!
biggest regret: Missing the Say Hi set at Home Slice on Friday evening. Doh!
band that surprised me by rocking so much: Buddy. Buddy is from LA and never tours. Their stuff is usually pretty acousticish and mellow, but they certainly plugged it in at Saturday’s show at the Compound. One of my favorites.
Until next year…
