Food, Inc. isn’t so much fun as it is a great movie you should see. It opened last Friday, and is now playing at the Regal Arbor at Great Hills Trail.
Yeah, we all know that factory farms are bad because they allow animals to be cramped up together, knee deep in their own feces and pumped full of antibiotics. And we all know that it’s better to get produce from the local farmers market than buy fruit flown in from Chile. But, unless you’ve read The Omnivore’s Dilemma or seen Food, Inc., you probably don’t know that some companies use ammonia to kill bacteria in burger filler (and then sell it to you) and that others genetically engineer seeds and then sue their own contracted farmers for patent infringement.
This film will show you the good, bad, and ugly of where your food comes from. But, it doesn’t try to push everyone into veganism or bully you into not eating at McDonald’s. It’s just an informative and mildly empowering film for people who eat.

Is The Royal Tenenbaums the greatest Wes Anderson/Wilson brothers movie? Highly likely. It’s either that or Rushmore. You’ll probably need to re-watch it to find out. As luck would have it, The Royal Tenenbaums will be playing at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz as part of the Big Screen Classics Signature Series on Wednesday, June 24th. It even starts early, at 7 pm, so no excuses.

Yet again, the Alamo Drafthouse is hosting a fun and tasty movie on Friday, June 19th at 7 pm (film starts at 8:30). They’ll be showing the original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (no CG and Johnny Depp here) at the Whole Foods at 6th and Lamar. This showing is part of their Sunset Supper & Cinema series.
The movie is free, and seating is first come, first served. They will be selling wine and beer, as well as a three course dinner for $15.
Put on your purple top hat and come on down!

There’s a lot going on tonight, for a Monday. I’d suggest going to Camera Obscura at Antone’s. They were just in town for SXSW, but who can get in to those official showcases? Oh yeah, no one.
Beautiful voices, nice pop music, sort of sound like Belle & Sebastian. It’s the type of music you’d listen to on a sunny, lazy day in a sepia-tinted room. They are on tour all the way from Glasgow in support of their most recent and fourth album, My Maudlin Career. Oh, and did you know that people from Glasgow are called Glaswegians? I sure didn’t!

I’m not going to lie. There isn’t a whole lot going on this week in the world of
fun. However, if I was going to do a fun thing, I’d go to the Ladies of the 80s Sing-Along at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz on Thursday. I’ve only been to one Sing-Along, the 90s grunge one, but it was one of the 10 most fun nights of my life (I really love the 90s and my life isn’t that exciting).
But, the 80s are probably just as fun, so buy a ticket ahead of time and memorize one of the dance routines from Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. You’re going to need it. Oh, and if you miss it this week, the Sing-Along will be playing again for the next two Thursdays.

Good news. The Helio Sequence is back in town! They played at the Mohawk about a year ago (I think), touring in support of their 2008 release, Keep Your Eyes Ahead. It was one of the best shows I went to last year. If you like indie pop, and bands like Rogue Wave and Death Cab for Cutie, you will enjoy this band.

The show is this Thursday, again at the Mohawk, and apparently starts at 8 pm. Go get your tickets at Waterloo…and buy Keep Your Eyes Ahead while you’re in there. If the show sells out, and you missed your chance to get tickets, you’ll be sad.
