Super psyched about this one! The Deathray Davies and Salim Nourallah, both out of Dallas, will be playing at the Buttercup CD release show on Friday at the Mohawk. I don’t know Buttercup, but I love the Davies and Salim. This should be a great show.
The Deathray Davies are really fun, high energy indie pop rock. Salim Nourallah, who I haven’t seen live, is a little more mellow. Listen to my favorite Deathray Davies song, She Can Play Me Like a Drum Machine.

I kind of want to go see Stellastarr* on Monday night, do you? Stellastarr*, a new wave/indie pop-ish type band from New York, is on tour supporting their third album, Civilized. They’ll be playing the Parish with Wild Light and Experimental Aircraft. I’ve never seen Stellastarr* live, but I imagine they’d put on a fun show.
If you like the Killers, you’d probably like them. Check out their tunes here.

Although this announcement belongs on the Calendar of Un-Fun, I’m posting it
anyway. Adam Yauch, a.k.a MCA (my favorite Beastie Boy), has been diagnosed with cancer and will have surgery next week. The good news is the cancer was caught early. The bad news is the Beastie Boys have canceled all remaining shows, including ACL. View the video announcement here.
To cheer yourself up, go to some of the fun events listed to the right.

Los Angeles-based Foreign Born, touring in support of their new album, Person to Person, is playing this coming Sunday with the Veils at the Mohawk. While they would appeal to people who like the Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, and Spoon, they aren’t a copy cat of any of these bands. They put on an energetic live show. Go check ‘em out!

Spoon is coming! Spoon is coming! Spoon is coming!
Austin’s very own Spoon is playing three nights in a row outside at Stubb’s with different openers each night. Thursday night Quasi and Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears will be opening, Friday it’s Low and Dale Watson, and Saturday’s openers are Atlas Sounds and the Strange Boys. If you don’t know Spoon, you’ve probably been living under a rock since 2000. Here, listen to my favorite Spoon song, Anything You Want.
Circa 2000, Brit Daniels opened solo for the Old 97’s at Stubb’s inside with just a guitar and some tape recorded drum beats. I thought he was a weird tool. What a fool I was! He sure showed me.
