Fruit Bats Double Punch! - Wednesday, September 2nd

213x600musicfruitbats_credita1I was first introduced to the Fruit Bats when I bought one of their cds from Cheapo in 2003.  It was cheap because it didn’t have a case.  What a deal!  They’re good.  Don’t worry, they’ve released albums since then. The latest, The Ruminant Band, was released August 4th.

On Wednesday, the Fruit Bats are playing a free in-store at Waterloo Records at 6 pm, as well as a show at the Mohawk.  My iTunes Genius suggests they will appeal to people who like Wilco, Holopaw, and Rogue Wave.  I think I agree.

Telegraph Canyon, Saturday, August 29th @ End of an Ear, FREE

telegraph1 Telegraph Canyon, the DFW band who had their cd release last night at Stubb’s, will be playing a free in-store on Saturday at 3 pm at End of an Ear.  I recently saw this band at another in-store at Waterloo Records and was glad I battled the beer line and parking to check them out.

From what I’ve heard, they’ve grown up a lot and it shows on their new release, The Tide and The Current.  They aren’t a copy cat band, but will appeal to fans of Centro-matic (coincidentally, Will Johnson produced their new record) and the quieter side of the Arcade Fire.

l_fa8454f3d4ac4f378a32183f32c6c8dcThere are a few good things going on this week.  Among them, the O’s will be playing at the Mohawk this Tuesday, August 25th.  Out of Dallas, this two man band is a pleasant dose of alternative country/folk rock.  Fans of Okkervil River and Whiskeytown (before Ryan Adams started to go downhill) will definitely like these guys.

Check out their MySpace page for a little taste.

Come down to Austin Music Hall this Thursday, August 20th for a little (or a lot of) girl power.  Two women in rock pioneers, Blondie and Pat Benatar, will be playing.  The Donnas will be opening the show.  Tickets are (surprisingly) still available.  More info here.

Now, if we could just get Joan Jett in on this action…

As you all know, Saved By The Bell is certainly making a come back lately, with the Jimmy Fallon-orchestrated reunion  in People and all.  Screech didn’t make it, not because he didn’t want to, apparently, but because the rest of the cast wouldn’t let him.  Read more about that here.

Anyway, the Institution Theatre is also bringing SBTB back into our lives with Staged By The Bell, live episodes of the show performed on stage at the United States Art Authority on Sunday nights from August 2-23.  I think we may have missed the “I’m so excited, I’m so excited, I’m so scared!” caffeine pills episode (I think they did that one the first weekend), but I’m sure there are more great performances in store.  Check it out.
